We have recently submitted new and exciting plans for two contemporary dwellings in the historic village of Upper Poppleton. The proposed homes mark the next phase in the restoration of the Grade II listed Model Farm.
At the heart of Upper Poppleton sits The Green, a picturesque village green lined with attractive 18th and 19th century buildings. Among them is Model Farm, occupying a commanding position overlooking The Green. In recent times, Model Farm has undergone extensive sympathetic restoration, bringing the former farmstead back into viable use.
However, a collection of dilapidated 20th century agricultural sheds to the rear of Model Farm have long sat unused. Fining Associates’ proposals aim to replace these derelict structures with modern family homes, while preserving the site’s agricultural heritage.
The design brief called for two contemporary dwellings on the footprint of the existing sheds. Crucially, the new homes must complement, not impose upon, Model Farm’s historic character. Director Mike
Fining explains:
“We took inspiration from the original barns to reflect the rural history, referencing the vernacular with a modern interpretation. The buildings’ form and materiality mirror the agricultural sheds they replace. The designs are fresh and imaginative yet sensitive to the context.”
The Nissen Huts echo the half-round corrugated barns currently on site. Two ‘huts’ will be linked by a glazed section housing spacious open-plan living. Externally, the design implements black-stained cedar, weathered steel, galvanised castellated steel beams. a green roof and ‘living wall’.
The proposed “Field View Barn” takes cues from Model Farm’s pole and hay barns. Crowning the two-storey barn-style house, is a dual-pitched roof clad in black corrugated bitumen. Inside, accommodation spans three bedrooms, and open plan kitchen-dining-living space with exceptional views of the open country beyond.
Both homes adopt a low profile with agricultural features to complement the historic courtyard. Mature trees and planting are retained, while new native hedging and lawns complete the scheme.
Fining Associates believe the two designs provide exceptional living spaces suited to 21st century life. Crucially, the homes’ sensitive integration of old and new enhances the special character of Upper Poppleton’s historic core. The schemes reinforce Model Farm’s significance, continuing the restoration of this cherished Yorkshire farmstead.
