We’re thrilled to share that your local architects, Fining Associates has been honored with two prestigious York Design Awards!
Our first award was for the category of Commercial/Community, selected by a panel of expert architectural judges. Our second award was the “People’s Choice Award”, as it was voted for by members of the public.
This recognition builds upon the success we achieved in 2009 and 2013 and is a testament to our team’s commitment to delivering exceptional design solutions. We couldn’t be prouder this achievement.
The project that contributed to our latest accolades is the magnificent 7 Tower Street. Situated in the heart of York, this building overlooks the iconic Clifford’s Tower and holds a special place in the city’s rich history. Originally part of a Victorian-era residential townhouse expansion dating back to the mid-late 19th century, it boasts distinctive features, including stunning pink and cream mottled brickwork in Flemish bond, Welsh Blue Slate roofing, and beautiful dentilated eaves.
Over the years, the building underwent several transformations, serving as office space during the 20th century. While these changes reflected its usage at the time, much of the features such as original staircase and round arched stair hall window to the elegant moulded cornices, architrave, and sash window were salvegable.
Due to a decline in demand for office space and the need to adapt to modern requirements, the building sat vacant for some time. This provided us with the opportunity to restore the Grade II-listed townhouse to its former glory and optimize its potential for contemporary habitation.
Rather than attempting a pastiche imitation, we took a deliberate approach that emphasized the distinction between the Victorian and the contemporary.
Our design concept merged the original property with a modern extension, allowing us to preserve the significant elements that contribute to the building’s historical value and the conservation area.
The extension is intentionally modern in design, and serves as a visual transition between the old and the new. It features striking lightweight structural glass and eye-catching standing seam copper cladding, creating a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements. The ground floor of the extension provides a spacious kitchen, an accessible WC, and bicycle storage, while the first floor accommodates a luxurious bathroom, optimizing the layout for modern requirements.
