A home adapted for the future, with light, connection and outlook
This project involved a comprehensive garage conversion in York, transforming an existing detached double garage into comfortable, light-filled living accommodation at a private property in Nether Poppleton. A new glazed single-storey link extension connects the garage to the main house, creating a seamless transition between spaces — and a beautifully considered result for our clients.
Our clients needed their home to work harder for them. The ground floor required a new shower room, improved access between house and garage, and the flexibility to accommodate full ground-floor living should the need arise.
The existing garage openings were retained and repurposed to maximise natural light into the converted space. Additional openings were introduced to provide access, further light, and to frame an excellent view of the surrounding gardens and countryside. The glazed link ties it all together — a bright, generous corridor that feels like a natural part of the home rather than an afterthought.
Materials were carefully chosen to complement rather than mimic the existing brick dwelling: a brick lower course with horizontal timber cladding above, grey aluminium fascias, and a GRP flat roof with dome rooflights.
Navigating a Green Belt extension in York
The site falls within the general extent of York’s Green Belt. Securing planning permission for a Green Belt extension in York requires a nuanced approach. Our planning statement set out a clear case for the proposal as a proportionate, appropriate addition — infilling a small fenced area between the house and garage without affecting the openness of the Green Belt. Planning permission was granted by City of York Council, with no objections from the Parish Council or neighbouring properties.
